National Calendar of Events

The National Calendar of Events is a function of the Board of Trustees of the National Medical Association.  © 1988 Theresa Greene Reed, M.D.

NMA Mission Statement

To advance the science and art of medicine for people of African descent through education, advocacy, and health policy, to promote health and wellness, eliminate health disparities, and sustain physician viability.

NMA’s Official History

In preparation for NMA’s 1995 Centennial Celebration, NMA selected the following publication as the official history of NMA:  “An Exploratory Descriptive Study of the National Medical Association” by George Edward Schwarz.  A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Program in Hospital and Health Administration in the Graduate College of the University of Iowa.  June 1969.  Montague S. Lawrence, M.D., past president of NMA, was a member of the thesis committee.  Special gratitude was expressed to W. Montague Cobb, M.D., Ph.D., past president of NMA and editor of the JNMA, who assisted with the study.  (A copy can be found in the Stokes Health Science Library of Howard University.)
